EMU Engage is a series of campus-wide gatherings designed to help the EMU community (students, faculty, staff) connect with each other and the values that guide us. For undergraduate students, these events also help fulfill graduation requirements. 

Undergrads: 

• You earn Engage Points for each Engage Event you attend.
• 10 Engage Points = 1 Engage Credit
• 6 Engage Credits are needed to graduate

Engage Events happen at various times throughout the semester, but a key time is Wednesday mornings, 10:15 AM - 11:05 AM.

Most every Wednesday morning, you can expect either a Convocation with a guest speaker or a Campus Worship within the Christian faith tradition. Some Wednesdays, there are also Breakout Gatherings that are alternative spaces for a group gathering outside of the main Convocation or Campus Worship. 

Wednesday morning Engage Events are worth 2 Engage Points.
Other Engage Events at different times are worth 1 Engage Point.

Engage Events are the broad category for all campus-wide gatherings that count toward Engage Points and Engage Credits. Within Engage Events, there are several types you might attend:

• Convocations
  Intentional gatherings, usually held every-other Wednesday morning, where the campus community comes together to hear a guest speaker or presentation on a meaningful topic.
  

• Campus Worships
  Faith-centered gatherings in the Christian tradition, usually held every-other Wednesday morning opposite Convocation, providing space for reflection, worship, and community connection.
  

• Breakout Gatherings
  Alternatives to the Convocation or Campus Worship happening at the same time. Breakout Gatherings are smaller, often more interactive spaces focused on different topics or formats. These only are offered on select Wednesdays.
  

• Engage Events
  Any event worth Engage Points that's not a Convocation, Campus Worship, or Breakout Gathering is simply referred to as an Engage Event. These can be concerts, theater productions, select sports competition, and other designated club/department gatherings. 

All of these earn you Engage Points toward your graduation requirement.

• 30 academic credits transferred = 2 Engage Credits
• 1 additional Engage Credit for every 15 academic credits transferred beyond that

First of all, great job getting involved!

While you only need 10 Engage Points to earn 1 Engage Credit per semester (and that’s the maximum number of credits you can earn each semester), your extra points go toward bonus awards.

Here’s what happens with points beyond 10:

• They do not carry over to the next semester.

• They do count toward bonus rewards, like:

• $1 off at Common Grounds Coffeehouse for every point above 10, up to $10 per semester.

• The chance to win a prized emu trophy if you finish the semester as one of the top three point earners.

Remember, bonus rewards are semester-based, so be sure to claim them around finals week each semester. Keep an eye on your email for times and locations.

As you scan in and out of each event, our EMU Engage system will track your points for you. Because many attendance lists have to be uploaded manually by our staff, it may take 1 week for your Engage Points to show up for a particular event. Thank you for your patience. 

Attendance can be reviewed by logging into myEMU and under the Academics tab. Students are expected to ensure their own progress in meeting the graduation requirement, but the Student Life office will also monitor progress toward meeting the requirement and communicate with students who are not on track for completing the requirement. 

Because many attendance lists have to be uploaded manually, it may take 1 week for your Engage Points to show up for a particular event. If your point is still missing, email EngageEvents@emu.edu and name your specific concerns.

Engage Events are a team effort. Many events are suggested by EMU clubs, departments, and even individual students, faculty, and staff. Convocation are selected by the EMU Engage Committee after consulting the student body through surveys. 

If you or your clubs/department would like to host an Engage Event, fill out to seek approval. A member of Student Life will email back regarding approval status and will provide you with the information you need to know to make your Engage Event a success. 

In general, in order to be approved, an Engage Event needs to be open and accessible to all EMU undergraduate students, and it needs to highlight at least one EMU core value (Power & Equity, Environmental Sustainability, Intercultural Understanding, Faith & Meaning). Another prompt to help determine if an event is an Engage Event is to ask, “Will an undergraduate student leave a changed/better person for having attended? Or, will EMU be a better community thanks to this event?” If you can’t say “yes” to at least one of those questions, then your Engage Event idea will likely get approved.

 

If you are a student who first attended EMU between Fall 2018 and 2021 during our “Convo Point” system, the “Convo Points” you accumulated during that period will automatically carry over onto your EMU Engage record. Every 10 Convo Points counts as 1 Engage Credit. You still need 6 Engage Credits to graduate, but you likely have Engage Credits from your Convo Points. 

If you are a student who first attended EMU prior to our Convo Point or Engage Point system (Fall 2018), then you are exempt from the EMU Engage program. You do not need to collect Engage Points or Engage Credits.
