Biopharmaceutical expert discusses cardiac remodeling and collagen V

Jennifer Bryant, associate professor of biopharmaceutical sciences at the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy, Shenandoah University, presents a Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 4 p.m. in the Suter Science Center at 草莓社区. The lecture is titled “Home Improvement for Your Heart: Cardiac Remodeling and Collagen VI.”

The presentation will focus on cardiac remodeling and fibrosis that occur post-myocardial infarction. Cardiac remodeling includes cellular and molecular changes within the heart that cause alterations in size, shape, and function, which can lead to cardiac dysfunction. The presentation will explore the role of myofibroblasts and collagen VI in post-infarction wound
healing and cardiac remodeling. The studies presented will assess the presence of myofibroblasts and expression of collagen VI post-myocardial infarction as well as examine the role of collagen VI gene polymorphisms in patients with acute coronary syndrome.

Bryant is originally from Ohio and received her bachelor’s of science degree in biology from Westminster College in 2001. She received her PhD in biomedical sciences/physiology from Kent State University in cooperation with Northeast Ohio Medical University in 2006.

She has been a faculty member at Shenandoah University since 2006. Her current area of research involves investigation of the post-myocardial infarction cardiac remodeling process.
