Our options are not limited to the internships listed below. Organizations listed reflect sites where the Washington Semester has recently placed students or those that are currently looking for interns. Please feel free to do your own research and do not hesitate to contact the Washington Semester for further opportunities.
- Opportunities marked with a ✠are especially suited for Social Work majors completing their Senior Social Work Practicums.
Women, Children & Youth
- ✠– provides an array of programing for low-income youth, supporting their transition
to adulthood and working to meet their social, academic, and career needs.
- – An intervention program for disengaged youth facing obstacles that prevent them from accessing resources and achieving goals in education, employment, and healthy living.
- Interns shadow professional counselors, write case notes, and help youth find resources in the community.
- ✠– provides healthcare, English classes, and other support services for women and children.
- – community drop-in center that provides resources to expectant parents and families with young children, including ESL instruction, parenting classes, and support groups for victims of domestic violence.
Persons with Disabilities
- – an inter-denominational Christian community centered around communal living with members who have intellectual disabilities.
Refugees & Immigrants
- ✠– case management and employment support services to refugees and those with asylum status in DC.
- ✠– helps torture survivors engage with social, psychological, and legal services as
well as advocacy and outreach.
- Past interns have supported torture survivors with asylum cases, accompanied them to court hearings, attended group sessions, and provided one-on-one support.
- ✠– supports immigrant communities in the DC region through social and legal services
in a variety of arenas, including children and youth services, domestic violence,
human trafficking, and immigration law.

Homelessness
- – provides shelter and social services for women experiencing homelessness.
- ✠– provides services for men experiencing homelessness and features a running therapy program.
Additional Services
- ✠– works with individuals involved in the criminal justice system from the point of arrest and pretrial status through reentry into the community upon release from prison.
- ✠– provides legal and social services, food, clothing, and medical care to low-income families.
- – works with program participants, previously homeless, to learn cooking skills and provide meals to DC’s hungry and homeless.
