{"id":37473,"date":"2018-03-26T08:43:44","date_gmt":"2018-03-26T12:43:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=37473"},"modified":"2018-04-04T21:49:14","modified_gmt":"2018-04-05T01:49:14","slug":"biochemistry-major-awarded-accreditation-by-the-american-society-for-biochemistry-and-molecular-biology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/biochemistry-major-awarded-accreditation-by-the-american-society-for-biochemistry-and-molecular-biology\/","title":{"rendered":"Biochemistry major awarded accreditation by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology  \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>草莓社区\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/chemistry\/biochemistry\">biochemistry program<\/a> has joined the ranks of a select group accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB).<\/p>\n<p>The program received notification of its full seven-year term of accreditation in January.<\/p>\n<p>Nationally, fewer than 75 colleges and universities have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asbmb.org\/Accreditation\/Schools\/\">programs accredited by ASBMB<\/a>, including only five others in Virginia.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whsv.com\/content\/news\/EMU-receives-new-accreditation-for-biochemistry-program-478683873.html\">Watch WHSV news coverage<\/a><\/aside>\n<p>The program was praised for its \u201cextensive active learning and inquiry-based\u201d and \u201cstrong quantitative\u201d components, plus its opportunities for students to develop written and oral communication skills, according to Adele J. Wolfson, a member of the accreditation subcommittee and a chemistry professor at Wellesley College.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccreditation is a testament to and external validation of the excellence of this program, from the design of major at the broad curriculum level to the concern for what goes into each and every class,\u201d said Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=cessnas\">Stephen Cessna<\/a>. \u201cPotential employers and graduate and medical school admissions committees will take note of the nationally recognized rigor of our program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biochemistry majors can now take the ASBMB standardized exam. A successful passing score results in the awarding of an ASBMB-certified degree, which is recognized upon graduation with a certificate and special cord and documents students\u2019 skills and knowledge base.<\/p>\n<p>Accreditation also affirms the closeness with which professors work with students outside of the classroom to help them find and apply for research and internship possibilities as well as post-graduate and professional training, he said.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Exit interviews: What graduating majors have said<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/03\/biochemistry-major-awarded-accreditation-by-the-american-society-for-biochemistry-and-molecular-biology\/20180322-biochem-stock-002-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-37477\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-37477\" src=\"\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/20180322-Biochem-Stock-002-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/20180322-Biochem-Stock-002-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/20180322-Biochem-Stock-002-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/03\/20180322-Biochem-Stock-002-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Students with a biochemistry major take a combination of chemistry and biology courses culminating in a two-semester advanced biochemistry series that includes a research laboratory experience.<\/p>\n<p>In exit interviews, graduating majors have repeatedly indicated to Cessna appreciation for authentic research opportunities early in the normal laboratory curriculum, for which they take \u201cmeasurement of real substances in real environments, in experiments of their own design.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They have also pointed to reading requirements about recent biochemistry research as well as original articles by DNA researchers Watson and Crick \u2013 and to the ability to form small-college relationships with professors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey can get to know a PhD chemist or biochemist and work with them on cutting-edge science during the day and play board games with them in the evening,\u201d Cessna said.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Graduates in the field<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Diego Barahona \u201817 is now a graduate student at the University of Virginia.
