The 33-member group, conducted by James W. (Jim) Warner, will open the program with “A Song of Praise,” arranged by James D. Ployar and based on the hymn, “This is My Father’s World.”

The ensemble will also perform “Towards a New Horizon,” by Steven Reineke, an overture commissioned by the city of Shoreview, Minn., to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding.

Also on the program will be an “American Hymnsong Suite” by David Milburn and “A Longford Legend,” written in 1996 by Robert Sheldon and based on the composers impressions of three poems found in a collection of 18th century Irish street ballades.

The concert will conclude with “The Turtle’s Retort,” by Frank Bridge (1879-1941) and arranged by Mark Fonder. Written in 1919, it is a classic example of a proper British dance-hall-style period piece.

Ensemble members are equally divided between EMU students and the local community.

Warner taught in public schools for 34 years in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia, with most of this time as director of bands at Harrisonburg High School. He retired from HHS in July, 2005.

Admission to the concert is free. Donations are welcomed for the EMU music department student scholarship fund.

The 25-member group, directed by James Warner, will play a varied repertoire of selections for wind instruments.

The program will include: “Variants On a Shaped Note Tune” by Johnnie Vinson, “Canzona,” a brisk short work premiered by the Eastman Wind Ensemble in New York in 1951; “Variations” on “A Mighty Fortress is Our God,” by Tim Waters; “Nettleton,” an early American hymn tune arranged by Johnny Vinson, “Pennywhistle Jig” by Henry Mancini with Michelle Leaman featured on piccolo; and others.

Warner, who is also director of the EMU Jazz ensemble, taught in public schools for 34 years in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia, most of this time as director of bands at Harrisonburg High School. He retired from HHS in July, 2005.

Admission to the concert is free; donations are welcomed for the EMU music student scholarship fund.

The 23-member group, conducted by James W. (Jim) Warner, will open the program with “Allerseelen (All Souls’ Day),” an art song by Richard Strauss, arranged by Albert Oliver Davis.

The ensemble will also perform “Amparito Roca” by Jaime Texidor Dalmau, a composer and conductor who lived most of his life in northern Spain. This piece is dedicated to a girl named Amparito (the diminutive of Amparo) Roca.

Also on the program will be “Cajun Folk Songs II” by Frank Ticheli and “Scootin’ on Hardrock (Three Short Scat-Jazzy Dances),” a musical homage by David Holsinger to Hardrock Road, the former Main Street of a once thriving community close to the railroad line between Dallas and Ft. Worth, Tex.

“One doesn’t mosey down Hardrock Road anymore,” the composer notes. “The only reason to drive there now is to go from somewhere you’ve been to someplace you haven’t. But once upon a time, Hardrock Road was the center of town.”

The concert will conclude with an arrangement of “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” a “Salute to Glenn Miller” and “Hymn for a Child (Jesus Loves Me).”

Ensemble members are equally divided between EMU students and the local community.

The 32-member group, conducted by James W. (Jim) Warner, will perform “Brook Green Suite,” a 1933 composition by Gustav Holst that includes the use of a folk melody. The suite exhibits Holst’s melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and stylistic maturity at their highest level.

The ensemble will also perform “The Gathering of the Ranks at Hebron” by David R. Holsinger, based on a story of King David in I Chronicles 12:23-28; and “To a Wild Rose,” by American composter Edward MacDowell (1860-1908).

Also on the program will be “In the Temple of Zion,” a contemporary work by Steven Reineke inspired by a visit to Zion National Park in Utah; “When the Morning Stars Sang” by James Curnow, inspired by the biblical story of Job; and “As All the Heavens Were a Bell” by Jay Bocook, a tribute to the firefighters of New York city for their heroic efforts surrounding Sept. 11, 2001; and “Lead On, O King Eternal,” a setting by James Swearingen.

Ensemble members are equally divided between EMU students and the local community.

The 草莓社区 will present a program of contemporary concert band music 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Apr. 11, in Lehman Auditorium.

The 28-member group, conducted by James W. (Jim) Warner, will perform “Psalm 46” by John Zdechlik and “With Quiet Courage,” Larry Daehn’s musical tribute to Lois Daehn, premiered by the U.S. Navy Band on Sept. 16, 1995.

The ensemble will also perform a pair of recent European compositions – “Ammerland” by Jacob deHaan and “Melody in Five” by Jan Hadermann. The latter piece is notable for its constant 5/8 time signature throughout.

Also on the program will be “Inventions from The Sacred Harp” by James Curnow. Based upon the hymn tune “Resignation,” this piece was published in 2005. The concert will conclude with “The Hounds of Spring,” inspired by Algernon Charles Swinburne’s poem of the same name.

Warner, who is also director of the EMU Jazz ensemble, taught in public schools for 34 years in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia, most of this time as director of bands at Harrisonburg High School. He retired from HHS in July, 2005.

The 草莓社区 , directed by James W. (Jim) Warner, will present its fall concert 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, in EMU’s Lehman Auditorium.

The 32-member group will play a varied program of music, including "Three Chorale Preludes" by William Latham based on "Break Forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light," "My Heart is Filled With Longing" and "Now Thank We All Our God."

The group will also perform "The Walking Frog," a circus walkabout by Karl King arranged by Robert E. Foster, "Toccata" by Frescobaldi arranged by Earl Slocum, "O Magnum Mysterium" by Morten Lauridsen transcribed for band by Robert Reynolds, "On An American Spiritual" by David Holsinger based on "Were You There" and "All Creatures of Our God," a contemporary setting by Stephen Bulla.

The concert will mark the EMU Wind Ensemble’s sixth year at EMU. The ensemble, started by former EMU professor Stephen W. Sachs, is made up of current and former EMU students and musicians from the local community.

Warner, who also directs the EMU , is retired after serving 26 years as director of bands at Harrisonburg High School and a total of 34 years as a high school teacher. He is a former member of the orchestra.

Wind Ensemble to Perform /now/news/2004/wind-ensemble-to-perform/ Wed, 17 Nov 2004 05:00:00 +0000 http://www.emu.edu/blog/news/?p=760 The EMU Wind Ensemble will perform 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, in Lehman Auditorium.

The 45-member ensemble, conducted by David J. Snively, adjunct professor of music at EMU, will perform works by Darius Milhaud, Aaron Copland, Vincent Persichetti and Eric Osterling.

"Suite Francaise" by French composer Darius Milhaud is a five-movement work. Each movement is a tone painting of a provence in France as the composer saw them between the first and second world wars. The provence’s are: Normandie, Bretagne, Ile De France, Alsace-Lorraine and Provence.

A "Tribute to Aaron Copland" will feature excerpts from three of his most popular works: "Fanfare For The Common Man," "Appalachian Spring" and "Rodeo."

An American work by a composer who helped with the revolution in band music in the 1950’s, "Pageant" by Vincent Persichetti, starts with a beautiful chorale-like slow section. followed by a quite dissonant allegro.

A concert March by Eric Osterling titled "Charter Oak" will round out the evening.

David Snively retired last year after serving 19 years as band director at Broadway High School. He teaches clarinet and has played in the EMU orchestra and wind ensemble and other chamber ensembles.

He holds a bachelor of music degree and a master of music in clarinet performance from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. While at Eastman, he was a member of the Eastman Wind Ensemble under the direction of Frederick Fennell and Clyde Roller.

Following graduation, he played in the Richmond Symphony while teaching clarinet at the University of Richmond and serving as band director in the Hanover County Schools. He later played in the Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) Symphony, now the Florida Philharmonic, and the Miami Opera Orchestra. He was also on the faculty of Broward Community College and taught clarinet at Florida Atlantic University. In addition, he played with the Miami Philharmonic, the Florida Chamber Orchestra and the Palm Beach Symphony and Opera Orchestras.

The wind ensemble, in its fourth year, includes EMU students and alumni, students from Eastern Mennonite and Harrisonburg High schools and other players from the greater Shenandoah Valley area.

The ensemble, directed by Dr. Stephen W. Sachs, professor of music at EMU, will give a program on the theme, “The Fantastic.”

Selections will include “I’ve Made My Plans for the Summer,” written by John Philip Sousa and featuring Eric Dicken on trumpet, “The Winds of Poseidon” by Robert W. Smith, “Gandalf” by Johann de Meij, “Tocata” and “La Tumba de Alejandro Garcia Caturla” by Shelley Hanson, “Prelude on ‘My Lord, What a Mornin'” by Carl Strommen, and “Raise of the Son” by Rossano Galante.

The Wind Ensemble is comprised of 63 instrumentalists, including EMU students and alumni, local community players, high school students from Broadway, Harrisonburg, Eastern Mennonite and Robert E. Lee, and a student from Shelburne Middle School.

Admission to the concert is free; however, a $5 donation at the door will be accepted – but not required – for the EMU music student scholarship fund.
