EMU Names New Track and Field Coach /now/news/2004/emu-names-new-track-and-field-coach/ Thu, 24 Jun 2004 04:00:00 +0000 http://www.emu.edu/blog/news/?p=677 Seth McGuffin
EMU’s latest track and field coach, Seth McGuffin.

Larry R. Martin, director of athletics at EMU, has announced the promotion of Seth D. McGuffin to track and field head coach, effective July 1, 2004.

McGuffin replaces Paul D. Johnson, who has accepted the position of assistant principal in the Page County (Va.) School System, Martin said.

McGuffin has been assistant track and field coach at EMU since 1998, concentrating on field events and strength and conditioning. He has served as the sports information director for the university since 1999. He will resign his SID position post to assume the head coaching duties.

During his tenure, McGuffin has coached six ODAC individual champions, 17 All-ODAC selections and two NCAA qualifiers, and his athletes have set nine school records.

A 1996 graduate of Lynchburg College, where he was an assistant coach for two years, McGuffin was a five-time NCAA All-American in throwing events.

Well-known in the Valley track and field world, he has conducted throws clinics across the Commonwealth, including a 2002 presentation at the Virginia High School Coaches Association.

“Seth offered the opportunity for our track and field team not to miss a beat by moving from assistant to the head coaching position,” Martin said. “He and Coach Johnson worked as a team, and I expect the strong recruiting and performances by Royal track and field student-athletes to continue,” he added.
