Ìý(Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton) had her best finish of the year, earning the runner-up medal.Ìý She crossed the 6k course in 23:45.1, following only Bridgewater’s Kaylee Kubisiak, who won her second Old Dominion Athletic Conference title in 23:35.6.

¹ó°ù±ð²õ³ó³¾²¹²ÔÌýÌý(Dover, Ohio/Dover) came in third in her first go-around at the ODAC Championships, clocking a time of 24:10.8. ÌýShe took a full 67 seconds off her race on the same course as the ODAC Preview.Ìý Both Chappell-Dick, who didn’t run at the ODAC Preview, and Lehman earned All-ODAC First Team honors with their finishes.

Ìý(St. Joseph, Ill./St. Joseph-Odgen) landed on the All-ODAC Second Team as she crossed 13th with a time of 25:28.9.ÌýÌýÌý(Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) andÌýÌý(Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway) followed each other through the chute as they rounded out EMU’s top five.Ìý Eckman was 18th in 25:49.4 while Kreider was 19th in 26:03.0, beating a Roanoke runner by half a step.

¹ó°ù±ð²õ³ó³¾²¹²ÔÌýÌý(Gig Harbor, Wash./Peninsula) was sixth for the Royals, taking 26th in 26:27.1, whileÌýÌý(Puyallup, Wash./Mountainview International) was 46th in 27:46.7.

The Royals charted 55 points as a team to finish second.Ìý BC won the title with 42 points, as the two friendly rivals dominated the race with 11 of the top 19 finishers.Ìý Washington and Lee was third with 83 points.

Coach Jason Lewkowicz said the ODAC race set up his runners for the upcoming regional meet.

“I’m really proud of the team today,” said Lewkowicz.Ìý “The conditions were tough but they responded to my challenge to embrace the opportunity to compete and show their toughness, which they did.Ìý The women stuck their nose into the race hoping to win and although they fell a little short, you can’t complain about their effort and strong runner-up finish.Ìý This effort gives us a lot of momentum as we prepare for regionals.”

ODAC Awards
Aside from the All-ODAC honorees, the women claimed two special awards from the league.

Kat LehmanÌýwas named the ODAC Rookie of the Year, as she was the top D-III runner at three of her four races during the regular season.Ìý She was named ODAC Runner of the Week three times during the year as well.

´³³Ü²Ô¾±´Ç°ùÌýHannah Chappell-DickÌýwas voted the women’s cross country ODAC Scholar-Athlete, charting a 3.84 GPA as a biology and kinesiology double major.Ìý She has been named to the ODAC All-Academic Team and USTFCCCA All-Academic Team twice each, is a three-time All-ODAC First Team honoree, and went to nationals in both cross country and outdoor track (800m) as a sophomore.

EMU’s runners have an off weekend next week as they prepare for the South/Southeast Regional Championships.Ìý That meet is Nov. 15 in Rome, Ga.

EMU men, women claim top spot at Shenandoah Invitational /now/news/2014/emu-men-women-claim-top-spot-at-shenandoah-invitational/ Mon, 22 Sep 2014 14:59:33 +0000 http://emu.edu/now/news/?p=21798 The ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø women’s cross country team finished with the lowest possible team score, winning the meet, while the EMU men also brought home top honors at the Shenandoah Valley Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 20. Both teams will run at theÌýNCAA D-III Pre-Nationals next Saturday, Sept. 27, in Mason, Ohio.

EMU Women Perfect With Top Five Finishers

So this is what they are capable of.

Running with a full team on Saturday, the Eastern Mennonite women were perfect. Literally. The Royals charted the lowest possible team score with 15 points, and won the Shenandoah Valley Invitational over co-host Bridgewater College, who had 40.

EMU’s women were not at full strength in their only other meet so far this season, taking third at the ODAC Preview on Aug. 29.

Although assistant coach Breanna Newton actually won the individual title on Saturday, the Royals had the top five collegiate runners. ¹ó°ù±ð²õ³ó³¾²¹²ÔÌýÌý(Dover, Ohio/Dover) led the way, cruising in with a time of 19:27 on the 5k course. Running in her first race of 2014,ÌýÌý(Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton), an NCAA nationals participant last year, was next with a time of 20:03.

Ìý(Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway) cruised in at 20:14 followed byÌý(Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) in 20:17.ÌýÌý(St. Joseph, Ill./St. Joseph-Odgen), who also missed the ODAC Preview, rounded out the scoring five in 20:31.

The dominating performance helped EMU easily beat Bridgewater, the defending ODAC champions, who are ranked No. 2 in the South/Southeast Region. The Eagles had a pack of five runners do their scoring, and they all finished 28-33 seconds behind Paden. The Royals had not been listed among the top 10 teams in the region so far this year, but should expect to appear on the list this week.

Ìý(Gig Harbor, Wash./Peninsula) andÌýÌý(Puyallup, Wash./Mountainview International) finished EMU’s top seven. Eldridge was 18th in 21:24 while Patterson was 21st in 21:27.

With the way they looked on Saturday, you wouldn’t have known that the EMU men hadn’t run a competitive race in three weeks. The Royals landed the top three finishers at the Shenandoah Valley Invitational in Elkton, Va., and beat co-host Bridgewater College, the No. 1 team in the South/Southeast Region.

³§±ð²Ô¾±´Ç°ùÌýÌý(Millersville, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) headed the charge, as he earned the gold medal as the top finisher. Gehman crossed the four-mile course on Elk Run Trails in 21:03, a full 16 seconds ahead of his nearest competition.Ìý His nearest racer turned out to be a teammate inÌý(Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance), who took silver in 21:19.ÌýÌýÌý(Sterling, Ill./Sterling) was right behind him, taking third in 21:24.

Bridgewater had the next six finishers, but EMU rounded out their scoring withÌý(Wichita, Kan./Wichita East) landing 10th in 22:03 andÌýÌý(Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton) in 12th at 22:06.

Ìý(Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) was 14th in 22:17, withÌýÌý(Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) taking 21st in 22:25.ÌýÌý(Perkasie, Pa./Christopher Dock) was just a few steps behind his teammate in 22nd at 22:28.

Eastern Mennonite totaled just 28 points with their top five runners, edging past the Eagles who had 30. After winning the South/Southeast Regional Meet last fall, BC has been ranked No. 1 in both rankings so far this year. The Royals charted at No. 8 this past week.

Chappell-Dick, King claim gold at ODAC Championships /now/news/2014/chappell-dick-king-claim-gold-at-odac-championships/ Mon, 21 Apr 2014 19:42:23 +0000 http://emu.edu/now/news/?p=19978 The ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø track and field teams competed at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, April 18-19, 2014, at Roanoke College.

Women’s track and field

SophomoreÌýÌý(Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton) highlighted the ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø track & field women at the ODAC Championships as she won two individual titles and broke a record.Ìý Roanoke College hosted the conference’s title meet in Salem, Va.

Chappell-Dick claimed a pair of gold medals with the resulting All-ODAC First Team status.Ìý In the 1500m, Chappell-Dick had a huge PR to break the ODAC Championships record.Ìý The sophomore crossed in 4:38.61, out-pacing rival Annalise Madison of Washington and Lee by a full second.Ìý Both runners broke the meet record of 4:43.08, set by All-American Carmen Graves in 2012.Ìý It was also an EMU record for Chappell-Dick, who easily broke her own mark of 4:47.12 from last spring.

Chappell-Dick and Madison went head-to-head again in the 800m, with Chappell-Dick again coming out on top.Ìý She ran off her EMU record time, but still cleared the field by three seconds with a time of 2:18.31.Ìý TeammateÌýÌý(Goshen, Ind./Goshen) had a great race and PRed in 2:25.23.Ìý She finished eighth and just missed pointing by a mere nine-tenths of a second.

In the javelin,ÌýÌý(Gig Harbor, Wash./Peninsula) just missed All-ODAC honors with a fourth-place finish.Ìý Borg’s best spear landed at 29.32m to just edge out W&L’s Leigh Dannhauser on her final effort.

The 4x400m relay team grabbed sixth, asÌýÌý(Puyallup, Wash./Mountainview International), Schirch,ÌýÌý(Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway) and Chappell-Dick combined to time at 4:27.36.

Ìý(Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) snuck a point in the discus, finishing sixth at 31.45m.

³§±ð²Ô¾±´Ç°ùÌýÌý(Mt. Pleasant, Pa./Mt. Pleasant Area) finished her career well, setting her PR in the 5000m with a time of 19:29.20.Ìý Similar to Schirch, Rittenhouse finished eighth, with the top six in each event earning points to the team total.

The Royals totaled 26 points to finished seventh out of nine teams at the meet.Ìý Roanoke won the team title with 150.33 points.

Men’s track and field

It was almost expected, but the ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø men’s track & field team made a clean sweep of the high jump medals at the 2014 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship meet.Ìý Roanoke hosted the two-day event in Salem, Va., on Friday and Saturday.

EMU entered the ODAC Championships with three of the top four heights in the high jump during the season.Ìý They made it a top-three sweep.ÌýÌýÌý(Dalton, Ohio/Central Christian) earned his fourth consecutive indoor and outdoor title, as the senior had no problem in clearing 2.04m (6-8.25ft) to win the meet and set a new EMU record.ÌýÌýÌý(Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) had the most surprising finish, claiming the silver at 2.02m (6-7.5ft).Ìý Moore recently joined the team after the completion of the men’s volleyball season a few weeks ago.Ìý SophomoreÌýÌý(Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) was third at 1.91m (6-3.25ft).Ìý All three claim All-ODAC status, and each also have a shot at qualifying for the national meet.

Ìý(Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) just claimed a spot in the finals of the 400m dash, standing sixth after the preliminaries with a time of :50.41.Ìý The freshman then set his PR in the finals, finishing fourth with a time of :50.20.

Ìý(Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) took points in the 3000m steeplechase, earning fifth with a time of 10:19.7.

The 4x400m relay team ofÌýÌý(Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), Winters,ÌýÌý(Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) andÌý(Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle) was fifth as well, combining for a time of 3:25.08 and a photo finish ahead of Roanoke’s time of 3:25.13.

Thibodeaux andÌýÌý(Perkasie, Pa./ Christopher Dock) continued their season-long efforts at pushing each other in the 800m.Ìý Thibodeaux crossed sixth to grab the final point toward the team total, timing at 1:57.88.Ìý He was just three-tenths of a second from jumping into fourth place.Ìý Denlinger then took seventh place in 1:58.33.

Ìý(Millersville, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) set his PR by more than seven seconds in the 5000m run, crossing in 15:26.11 to take sixth place.Ìý ClassmateÌýÌý(Sterling, Ill./Sterling) was one position behind him with a time of 15:37.21.

Ìý(Lynchburg, Va./Heritage) andÌýÌý(Broadway, Va./Broadway) each qualified for the finals of 110m hurdles, with Cox grabbing sixth place in :16.07.

Ìý(Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) was one spot from pointing in the 10,000m run, crossing seventh in 34:22.97.

Ìý(Staunton, Va./Riverheads) topped his PR on three different efforts in the shot put, and finished eighth with his best heave at 12.38m (40-7.4ft).Ìý He also destroyed his PR in the discus, landing at 34.12m (111-11.3ft).

Eastern Mennonite finished seventh in a very tight grouping in the men’s team standings.Ìý EMU had 35 points, but was within three points of fourth-place Roanoke at 38.Ìý Virginia Wesleyan was fifth with 37 while Shenandoah was sixth at 36.

This was the final meet of the year for most of the Royals, although a few athletes will stick around in efforts to prepare for a potential trip to the NCAA National Championships, which are May 22-24 in Delaware, Ohio.Ìý The first meet scheduled as part of that stretch run is the Liberty Twilight Qualifier on Wednesday, April 30.

Ìý(Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) took a conservative approach to his first 3,000m steeplechase experience but still came through with an ODAC qualifying time of 10:45.01 which places him seventh on the EMU top-10 list.

Ìý(Sterling, Ill./Sterling) made his outdoor 5,000m debut a solid one as the junior came through with a time of 15:25.08 which was good for seventh place. The time also places him No. 2 on the EMU top-10 list. ÌýÌý(Millersville, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) now sits at No. 5 on the EMU list with his time of 15:33.46. ÌýÌý(Bluffton, Oh./Bluffton) also had a solid showing in his outdoor 5000m debut running a personal best time of 16:16.43.

Ìý(Staunton Va./Riverheads) highlighted his day by taking third in the shot put in Roanoke, landing at 11.96m (39-3ft).

Coach Jason Lewkowicz said he was very pleased with the start to the outdoor season.

“We had a hard week of training across the board and to see the team perform this well on tired legs is a great sign,” he explained. Ìý“We were blessed with great weather and great competitive atmospheres.Ìý With such a young team, it is important that we take each opportunity to go out, compete, and show consistent improvement. ÌýThis weekend was a great step in the right direction.Ìý We look forward to having a lot of fans come out to support us next Saturday at Bridgewater!”

The Eastern Mennonite track teams give their fans the best chance of the year to see them participate next Saturday, when they compete at the Dr. Harry GM Jopson Invitational hosted by Bridgewater College.

Track teams poised to break more records /now/news/2014/track-teams-poised-to-break-more-records/ Wed, 15 Jan 2014 18:52:21 +0000 http://emu.edu/now/news/?p=18972 How do you improve upon a season in which the team broke 12 different program records?Ìý If you are EMU track & field Coach Jason Lewkowicz, you bring back most of your key performers and throw in another round of skilled recruits for a promising third year of rebuilding the Royals track program.

“I’m really excited to see growth in our track & field program this year,” Lewkowicz said.Ìý “We have a lot of talented newcomers on the men’s side and a number of All-ODAC performers returning for the women. ÌýExpectations are high and we are excited about that.”

(Bluffton, Oh./Bluffton) is back for her sophomore season after breaking five Eastern Mennonite middle distance records in her first year.Ìý For the men, (Dalton, Oh./Central Christian) will look to improve on his incredible growth from last year.Ìý As a junior transfer, King was talked into trying the high jump by Lewkowicz.Ìý In his first-ever campaign in the event, King won both the indoor and outdoor ODAC titles, and also broke the EMU outdoor record.Ìý Not bad.

Lewkowicz said that with a balance of faith, team camaraderie and talent, he senses his men and women are poised to reach new heights in 2014.

“We are looking to continue to build off of that success from last year and part of that is the expectation that school records will continue to be broken,” he explained.Ìý “This adds to the level of excitement on the team because setting records is an indication of performing at a level that will help us as a team at the ODAC level.Ìý At the end of the day, the goal is to get better each time out and let the accolades come as they will.”

Also back for the men is sophomore (Broadway, Va./Broadway), who took the silver in the 60m hurdles at the ODAC indoor meet and bronze in the 100m hurdles at the outdoor meet.Ìý For the women, sophomore (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) was third in 800m outdoor race, finishing just behind Chappell-Dick.Ìý The women had a distance medley relay team take third at the indoor meet in 2013, and Brumfield, (Gap, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite), and (Goshen, Ind./Goshen) all return from that foursome.Ìý Another sophomore, (Gig Harbor, Wash./Peninsula), was third in the javelin last spring to round out EMU’s athletes who earned an All-ODAC honor last year.

Lewkowicz expects those athletes to be the core of his squads this year, along with (Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway) in the distance runs, (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) in the throws and jumper (Canby, Ore./Western Mennonite).Ìý Garber earned the No. 3 spot in the EMU record books in both the indoor and outdoor triple jump as a freshman in 2011, but took the last two years off.Ìý For men, (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) will help push King in the high jump.Ìý Last year as a freshman, he broke the school’s indoor high jump record before King took it over.Ìý Cross country standouts (Millersville, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) and (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) will lead the distance group.

EMU’s coach pointed out that the men’s talent level is getting much deeper this year.

“In the hurdles, All-ODAC performer Richard Robinson is joined by talented freshman (Lynchburg, Va./Heritage),” explained Lewkowicz.Ìý “ (Mechanicsville, Pa./Atlee) and (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) highlight a talented group of freshmen sprinters, with (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) and (Perkasie, Pa./Christopher Dock) coming into a middle distance group that could score a lot of points at the ODAC meets.Ìý Returners (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts), (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle) and (Nelson, Va./Nelson Country) give us a level of depth that we have not had in years.”

Along with the freshmen men that Lewkowicz pointed out, he noted a handful of returners who might turn heads with the improvements they have made.

“I think Erica Garber will make steady progress as the season goes on,” he said.Ìý “Juni Schirch and (Mt. Pleasant, Pa./Mt. Pleasant Area) missed most of last year due to sickness and injury and I expect them both to do well.Ìý On the men’s side, Philip Watson and Jonathan Bush are poised to breakout this season.

With a number of Royals runners either competing or training with the cross country team this fall, Lewkowicz explains the transition of the group into the track season.

“Moving out of a successful cross country season, the focus turned to bringing the entire track team together as a unit,” he said.Ìý “We have a lot of newcomers, some folks returning from/leaving for cross culturals, and some returning from injuries.Ìý Getting everyone on the same page and focused on the same goals is always a priority.Ìý We are also putting a lot of emphasis on doing the little things well to help keep us healthy in body, mind and spirit.

After years of running their championship meets with an “open” format, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference has added qualifying standards this year.Ìý Although the Eastern Mennonite teams continue to grow in number (25 men and 14 women), the benchmarks are more likely to provide nice targets for EMU’s athletes rather than limit how many Royals participate.

“At this point, the standards should not have too much of an effect on our team,” said Lewkowicz, “since each school is guaranteed three spots in each event, regardless of time/mark attained, in addition to four ‘wild card’ placements at the ODAC meet.Ìý While we do have depth in several areas that could leave some folks out, I believe most of our athletes will be able to hit the qualifying mark for their respective event(s).”

The 2013 track season nearly became synonymous breaking records, and the Royals hope to do the same thing in 2014.Ìý They also want to rise out of the middle of the pack at the ODAC meet.

“We want both teams to improve their finish at the ODAC meet, both for the indoor and outdoor season,” Lewkowicz said.Ìý “We already saw a school record broken at the December meet and we anticipate a lot more of that taking place over the course of the season.Ìý It is also my hope that we use our platform as a collegiate team to represent our university well and to glorify Christ through our attitude, effort, humility and sportsmanship.Ìý He is the giver of all good gifts and we want to honor Him in all that we do.”

The EMU teams are in action this weekend at the Liberty Open in Lynchburg.Ìý The ODAC Indoor Championships are March 2 in Hampton, Va., with nationals two weeks later in Lincoln, Neb.Ìý The outdoor season then starts on March 22, with the ODAC Outdoor Championships on April 18 and 19.Ìý After a handful of “last chance” meets, the national outdoor meet is May 22-24 in Delaware, Ohio.

The silver medal was the highest team finish since the Royals won the league championship in 2001.

Lanae Kreider (Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway) headed a trio of women who were All-ODAC Second Team as she crossed eighth. The junior’s time of 24:39.90 was just 3.5 seconds behind seventh and a First Team spot.

Katie Eckman (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco), who was hampered by a foot injury last season, repeated her Second Team award from 2011 with her 11th place finish in 25:07.80. Jolee Paden (St. Joseph, Ill./St. Joseph-Ogden) was the final individual honoree as she took 14th in 25:11.70.

She finished in between a runner from Virginia Wesleyan and one from Lynchburg , as the trio crossed within 0.4 seconds of each other. Patty Danaher (Matoaca, Va./Matoaca) completed the top seven, as she was 46th in 27:53.40.

Next up is the South/Southeast Regional, hosted by Christopher Newport in Newport News, Va. That meet is on Saturday, Nov. 16.

New Marks Set in EMU All-Time Record Book at Commonwealth Duals /now/news/2013/new-marks-set-in-emu-all-time-record-book-at-commonwealth-duals/ Tue, 02 Apr 2013 13:32:54 +0000 http://emu.edu/now/news/?p=16568 While the EMU track and field teams didn’t send full squads to the Commonwealth Duals Saturday in Lynchburg, the Royals did get some nice finishes.Ìý The men saw a high jumper clear the second-best height in program history, while the women also had a handful of program top ten finishes.

(Dalton, OH/Central Christian) won the high jump by two heights, clearing 1.99m (6-6.25ft).Ìý His measurement also put him at the No. 2 spot on the EMU all-time list, behind only Phil Landes, who cleared 2.03m (6-8ft) in 1987.

(Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) had a good day in the sprints.Ìý He charted the No. 7 time in EMU history in the 200m dash, crossing in 22.73 seconds.Ìý In the 100m dash, McBride took the No. 8 spot with a time of 11.22.

Distance runner (Harrisonburg, VA/Harrisonburg) finished less than a quarter of a second behind Bridgewater’s Luke Sohl in the 800m run.Ìý The senior’s time of 1:58.47 gave him sixth place at the duals, and the No. 8 spot in the EMU books.

(Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) continued to impress in the 400m hurdles, as he set a new personal record at 58.15.Ìý He was also part of a 4x100m relay team which took the seventh-best time in EMU history.Ìý The team of (Fork Union, VA/Louisa County), McBride, Bush and (Nelson, VA/Nelson County) clocked at 44.00, also taking third at the event.

(Philadelphia, PA/La Salle) was the top EMU finisher in the 400m with a time of 52.14.

Allen’s best leap in the long jump landed at 6.46m (21-2.5ft), but he fouled on all three attempts in the triple jump.

(Ooltewah, TN/McCallie School) and (Salina, KS) both competed in the throws.Ìý Sloan was the top Royal in the shot put at 11.36m (37-3.25ft), while Walker was ahead in the hammer throw at 21.97m (72-1ft). ÌýSloan also landed at 44.82m (147-0ft) in the javelin, for fourth at the meet.

The women’s team had fewer athletes participating, but freshman (Bluffton, OH/Bluffton) flashed some top ten times in two events.Ìý She tried her hand at the shorter distances Saturday and won the 400m dash with the fifth-best time in EMU history.Ìý Chappell-Dick also ran the 200m dash, and finished with the No. 8 time in EMU’s books at 27.64 seconds.

(Harrisonburg, VA/Broadway) timed at 5:19.44 in the 1500m run, followed by teammate (Harleysville, PA/Christopher Dock) at 5:26.96.

In the throws, (Strasburg, VA/Strasburg) set a new PR in the hammer throw, with her first heave landing at 34.43m (112-11ft).Ìý She also had a distance of 27.17m (89-2ft) in the discus.

(Gig Harbor, WA/Peninsula) landed at 24.52m (80-5ft) in the discus and 26.80m (87-11ft) in the javelin.Ìý ‘s (Archbold, OH/Archbold) best throw in the javelin measured at 19.90m (65-3ft).

Track Men Break Distance Medley Relay Record /now/news/2013/track-men-break-distance-medley-relay-record/ Mon, 18 Feb 2013 17:04:04 +0000 http://emu.edu/now/news/?p=16091 ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø (EMU) sent members of the men’s and women’s track teams to two different meets over the weekend – the Susquehanna Open and the VMI Relays.Ìý The men’s distance medley relay team broke the EMU record in the event when they ran at the Susquehanna Open in Selinsgrove, PA.

(Wichita, KS/Wichita East), (Philadelphia, PA/La Salle), (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) and (Harrisonburg, VA/Harrisonburg) teamed up to best the distance medley time by more than 12 seconds, as they crossed in 10:37.15.Ìý The old record of 10:49.91 was set in 2003.Ìý The foursome finished second at the meet, and also clocked the second fastest time in the ODAC this winter.

Nafziger set his personal record (PR) in the 800m run, and just missed breaking two minutes.Ìý The junior broke the line in 2:00.99 and is fourth all-time in EMU history in the event.

The women’s distance runners for EMU also did well at the meet.Ìý In the mile run, Jolee Paden (St. Joseph, IL/St. Joseph-Odgen) crossed in 5:32.21.Ìý Sophomore Lanae Kreider (Harrisonburg, VA/Broadway) set her PR in the event at 5:40.84.Ìý The time was also good for No. 6 on the EMU Top Ten list.

In the 800m run, the Lady Royals had three runners who were all within the top ten list.Ìý Hannah Chappell-Dick (Bluffton, OH/Bluffton) finished third and was the top D-III finisher in 2:19.74.Ìý She was about a second behind her EMU record time.Ìý Chafin Brumfield (Harrisonburg, VA/Spotswood) and Juni Schirch (Goshen, IN/Goshen) each set their PRs and moved up in the history books.Ìý Brumfield crossed in 2:27.51 and is No. 3 all-time, while Schirch timed at 2:31.66 and is now No. 6.

EMU sent mostly field athletes to the VMI Relays on Saturday, and thrower (Ooltewah, TN/McCallie School) highlighted the day with a pair of PRs.Ìý In the weight throw, Sloan finished only behind a D-I VMI athlete with a throw of 12.78m (41-11.25ft).Ìý He is now No. 4 in the EMU history in the event.

In the shot put, Sloan set his PR with a toss of 12.59m (41-3.75ft) and is seventh all-time.

(Dalton, OH/Central Christian) was the top D-III finisher in the high jump, clearing 1.90m (6-2.75ft) on his second attempt.Ìý His is third on the EMU charts.

In the women’s weight throw, Jenni Beck (Archbold, OH/Archbold) landed her PR and is sixth all-time at EMU with 10.27m (33-8.5ft).Ìý Tedi Sanders-Palmer (Philadelphia, PA/Christopher Dock) was a few inches shorter at 10.04m (32-11.25ft) and is at No. 7.

Track Teams Keeping The Momentum Going /now/news/2012/track-teams-keeping-the-momentum-going/ Fri, 30 Nov 2012 16:44:03 +0000 http://emu.edu/now/news/?p=15139 This fall, both of EMU’s cross country teams exceeded preseason predictions.Ìý With such a strong carryover from those teams to the upcoming indoor track & field squads, what does second-year Coach expect?

“There is a new expectation of excellence,” he said, “and while we are still growing and have lots of room to improve, the mindset is one that is focused on being competitive and keeping the momentum going.Ìý Since so many of the cross country runners are also running track, it will be great to get the entire crew together and continue to pursue our goals.”

The track campaign starts with the indoor season opener this Saturday at the Liberty Kickoff in Lynchburg.Ìý It gets going in earnest after the upcoming Christmas break.

Lewkowicz is excited to see his team continue to grow in number and talent.Ìý The combined rosters totaled a mere 13 student-athletes the year before he took over the program.Ìý This year there are 40 men and women on the teams.

“Our team size has more or less doubled from last year which is a plus,” said Lewkowicz.Ìý “We have added a number of quality athletes that will help us be more competitive in the this year.Ìý There is a lot of energy with this group and the buzz that was created during the cross country season has carried over to our track team.Ìý We still lack depth is several critical areas but we will have a presence in most events which is exciting.”

Aside from all of the new faces on the roster this year, a big addition is the return of jumper Michael Allen (Fork Union, VA/Louisa County).Ìý In three previous seasons, he won multiple ODAC crowns as well as trips to the national meet.Ìý Allen is back for his senior campaign after missing last spring while studying off campus through EMU’s cross cultural program.

“It is great to have someone like Michael on our team for a number of reasons,” explained Lewkowicz.Ìý “He brings natural leadership and has competed at a high level, so he knows what it takes.Ìý He is admittedly rusty after taking a year off but he is working hard with Coach (Britton) Olinger and is beginning to regain his form.Ìý The talent is there and the potential is immense, although everyone will have to be patient as he works his way back into top shape.”

As happened this fall with the cross country teams, an influx of new talent should challenge some school records and buoy the process of rebuilding the Eastern Mennonite track & field program.

“On the women’s side, we will be very strong in the middle distance events,” Lewkowicz said.Ìý “We have four freshmen women who have run a faster 800m time in high school than our current school record, so that is exciting.”

The coach pointed to his top cross country runner, (Bluffton, OH/Bluffton), to lead that group, saying that she has potential to become an NCAA qualifier during her time at EMU.Ìý Lewkowicz also singled out the leadership and athleticism of senior (Berryville, VA/Clarke County), who is switching from middle distance to sprints and jumps this year.Ìý He also expects to see a few ODAC scorers from a strong crew of throwers.

“On the men’s side, it’s exciting to think about their potential to really make a jump in the ODAC rankings,” said Lewkowicz.

The Royals scored in the single digits in last year’s ODAC Championships.

Lewkowicz said that local product Richard Robinson (Broadway, VA/Broadway) could be one of the top freshmen hurdlers in the nation, with both he and Allen challenging for ODAC golds in their respective events.Ìý Dan Nafziger (Harrisonburg, VA/Harrisonburg) and Carlos Orellana (Grottoes, VA/Spotswood), the anchors of the cross country team, will also strengthen the distance group on the track team.

Other women Lewkowicz mentioned as likely to make some noise include: (Harrisonburg, VA/Spotswood) in the 400m and 800m, thrower (Waynesboro, VA/Waynesboro), middle distance runner (St. Joseph, IL/St. Joseph-Odgen) and (Harrisonburg, VA/Broadway) in the steeplechase.Ìý For the men, Lewkowicz also highlighted transfer Philip Watson (Philadelphia, PA/La Salle) and Jonathan Bush (Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts), both in the 200m and 400m.

As they prepare for their first meet, team unity is proving to be a strength.

“It has been a short turnaround from the cross country season so we are working to bring the team together and get focused on our common goals of honoring God with our team while pursuing excellence in our endeavors,” Lewkowicz explained.Ìý “I am blessed with a dedicated and talented coaching staff and we are all on the same page in what it takes to prepare our athletes to compete at a high level.Ìý Our hope is that these fundamentals honed and the fitness gained over the fall will be maintained over the Christmas break so we can come out in January and continue to progress.”

While always brimming with optimism, Lewkowicz knows neither his men nor women have the depth to grab a team title at an ODAC meet this year.Ìý But he thinks a top four or five finish would be an encouraging sign of progress, both to his athletes and to the general public.

“We have a number of athletes with the potential to be All-ODAC or ODAC champions, and there are a few who have ambitions of qualifying for the NCAA Championships,” the coach said.Ìý “There are a number of school records that we expect to fall this year and we will be keeping track of them on our bulletin board outside of the athletics office.Ìý We’re hoping for weekly updates to it!”

He also expects those records to be celebrated by the entire team, as well as for them to have higher goals that might not be seen on paper.

“While (breaking records) are individual goals, so to speak, they are accomplishments that would be appreciated and shared by the team as a whole,” said Lewkowicz. Ìý“Our main non-quantitative goals are to be a team that holds itself to a high standard morally, and ethically, to maintain humility and integrity, and to seek to honor our great God in all that we do, win or lose.”

(Gap, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) shaved two and a half minutes off her ODAC Preview time and crossed in 28:59.74.Ìý (Harleysville, PA/Christopher Dock) had a time of 29:27.32.

Eastern Mennonite took fourth as a team with 92 points, slightly behind Lynchburg in third with 85.Ìý The team score was hampered especially by Paden’s illness, as well as 2011 All-ODAC Second Teamer (Quarryville, PA/Solanco) missing the meet with an injury.

Washington and Lee had all five of their scorers in the top nine to run away with the team title at 29 points.Ìý Bridgewater had the top two finishers and took second with 51 points.

The women will now have a week off to get healthy and train for the South/Southeast Regional, which is Nov. 10 in Emory, GA.

The . Each of the seven Royals runners improved their time from the ODAC Preview Meet on the same course.
