With some tough serving, visiting Hollins jumped on Eastern Mennonite in set one, winning 25-19. The women turned things around in the second, scoring first and jumping to a 5-1 lead.Ìý They never trailed in claiming a 25-15 win.

Hollins put up the first point in the swing set but EMU took over with a 9-1 run, going up 15-8. The visitors got within 16-13 before the Royals tacked on a 5-0 run to re-take control en route to a 25-21 win.

Women now 3-1 after successful hosting of EMU Invitational /now/news/2014/women-now-3-1-after-successful-hosting-of-emu-invitational/ Mon, 01 Sep 2014 19:01:23 +0000 http://emu.edu/now/news/?p=21346 With a split on day two of the EMU Invitational, Eastern Mennonite’s volleyball women earned one of their best starts in recent history.Ìý Coupled with a sweep on the first day, the Royals are now 3-1 on the season.

The women will look to further improve that strong start when they hit the road on Wednesday, playing a non-conference match at nearby Mary Baldwin College.

Catholic 3, EMU 0
The Royals started the day with a tall task.Ìý Literally.Ìý The Catholic squad featured what was easily the tallest lineup of the six teams at the invite, but EMU was undeterred.Ìý The women stayed with the Cardinals for much of the first set until two late runs gave CUA a 25-18 decision.

Trailing 23-20 late in set two, the Royals surged to lock up the score at 24-24.Ìý They had the score tied two more times before Catholic got back-to-back kills to steal a 28-26 win.Ìý EMU then used a huge 9-1 run in set three to lock things up at 15-15, but the Cardinals scored the final five points to win 25-19.

Ìý(Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) was the lone Royal with double figures in kills, racking up 14 in the three sets.Ìý She also had 11 digs.ÌýÌýÌý(San Antonio, Tex./Brandeis) led all players with 18 digs.

Ìý(Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) had 16 set assists, whileÌý(Cheverly, Md./Elizabeth Seton) put up 14 with a match high four service aces.

EMU 3, Salem 1
The match with Salem featured big runs until the Royals finally grabbed momentum.Ìý But the swings were evident in set one, when the teams traded massive runs early only to be tied at 8-8.Ìý The Spirits etched out to a three-point lead all the way to game point at 24-21.Ìý But Eastern Mennonite scored five unanswered, including the final two on service aces, to surge to a 26-24 win.

Set two was just as wild, only this time Salem pushed to the finish with a 6-2 run to win 25-20.Ìý The Royals took all the momentum early in set three, however, riding a 16-2 explosion to a 25-14 decision.Ìý They closed the day on another 16-2 tear to again win 25-14.

The women featured a very balanced attack in the win, led by Ritchie’s 10 knockdowns.ÌýÌýÌý(Richmond, Va./Maggie L. Walker) andÌýÌý(Kenbridge, Va./Kenston Forest) each had seven kills and three others added five or more.ÌýÌýÌý(Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) andÌýÌý(Montross, Va./Washington & Lee )each had five blocks.

Miller was her usual stellar self with 21 digs.Ìý FreshmanÌýÌý(Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) was good for 17 digs and six service aces in her first collegiate match.

All-Tournament Team
Senior outside hitterÌýSara RitchieÌýwas named to the EMU Invitational All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of play.Ìý She pounded out 4.50 kills per set at the invite and added 3.36 digs along with a total of five aces.Ìý Ritchie had a high of 21 kills and 14 digs in the four-set win over Goucher on Friday, and also notched a double double in each match.

EMU theater production ‘Into the Woods’ brings Brothers Grimm fairy tales to life /now/news/2014/emu-theater-production-into-the-woods-brings-brothers-grimm-fairy-tales-to-life/ Thu, 27 Mar 2014 18:51:28 +0000 http://emu.edu/now/news/?p=19639 The twists and turns of several fairy tales taken from the Brothers Grimm are intertwined in the next ²ÝÝ®ÉçÇø theater offering,, a musical by Steven Sondheim with book by James Lapine.

Directed by , assistant professor of at EMU, Into the Woods will be performed in the Main Stage Theater at 7:30 p.m. on April 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12, plus a 3 p.m. matinee on Sunday, April 6. The show will run approximately three hours with intermission.

Information regarding age-appropriateness for EMU events is available through theÌýÌýat 540-432-4360 orÌýtheater@emu.edu.

Into the Woods weaves together the main characters from fairy tales like Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, Cinderella and others.ÌýThe story revolves around a childless baker and his wife on a quest to begin a family, and their interaction with a witch who has placed a curse on them.ÌýIn a departure from the standard plot line, the musical explores the consequences of these characters’ wishes.

Into the Woods is a sprawling story filled to the brim with complex characters and dark magic,” said Poole. “The story provides ample opportunities to push the limits of our imaginations as we explore innovative ways to stage complex theatrical moments. I want audiences to leave the theater feeling that they have had a visceral, engaging experience that transcends what they have felt while watching a film or other mediated form of entertainment.”

Reserved tickets are $15 for adults ($17 at the door) and $12 for seniors, non-EMU students and EMU faculty/staff ($14 at the door) and $6 for EMU students. Tickets are available through EMU’s box office: 540-432-4582, . Group rates are available.

Volleyball women split again at EMU Invitational /now/news/2013/volleyball-women-split-again-at-emu-invitational/ Mon, 02 Sep 2013 14:40:39 +0000 http://emu.edu/now/news/?p=18017 Continuing their solid start to the year, Eastern Mennonite’s volleyball women split day two’s matches at the EMU Invitational. The Royals lost a heart-breaking five-set match to Howard Payne and then regrouped to take down Salem College in four.

Howard Payne 3, EMU 2
The women had a great start to the day, closing on a 12-4 run to take game one by a score of 25-19. Howard Payne skipped ahead with quick wins of 25-17 and 25-11, putting EMU against the wall.

The Yellow Jackets held a slight lead for much of game four before a 3-0 burst put Eastern Mennonite up 24-23.Ìý Each team missed a chance to end it before a pair of HPU errors allowed the Royals to force game five, 28-26.

A 5-0 run looked to have EMU in the driver’s seat in the decider, leading 9-6. But the momentum quickly turned to the Yellow Jackets, as they scored six straight to go ahead 14-9. The Royals managed two points before HPU closed it out, 15-11.

Freshman (Port Republic, Va./Eastern Mennonite) led all players with 17 kills and added 11 digs and four blocks. Libero (San Antonio, Tex./Brandeis) was just as key with a whopping 31 digs. (Parkesburg, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) was good for 11 kills and four blocks. Miller and Kennel each had a pair of service aces.

EMU 3, Salem 1
After a short 30-minute break, the Royals returned to the floor to take on Salem, which went to the NCAA Tournament last fall. The Spirits came out on all cylinders and grabbed a 25-17 win in game one.

The women fell behind again in game two, before a 7-0 run changed the momentum of the day. Eastern Mennonite closed on a 21-11 run to win game two, 25-19. An 11-2 surge gave the Royals game three by the same score. The Spirits were done by the fourth game, which EMU took 25-16.

(Willow Street, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) got her first extended playing time of the weekend and responded with a match high 13 kills. Kennel and (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) each added 10 kills and four block assists.

(Cheverly, Md./Elizabeth Seton) had 28 set assists and three service aces.Ìý ophomore (Elkhart, Ind./Bethany Christian) was one of four Royals with double digit digs, as she scooped up 22 Spirit spikes.

As a team, EMU had season bests in hitting percentage, digs and total blocks.

Sophomore Katie Miller was named to the All-EMU Invitational Team for her efforts over the two day event. EMU’s libero averaged 4.81 digs per set, including 31 against Howard Payne, and added a team high seven service aces.

The Royals, now 2-2, stay at home for their next match, taking on Mary Baldwin Thursday in Yoder Arena.

In addition, two incoming students, Hannah Chappell-Dick, a senior at Bluffton High School in Bluffton, Ohio, and Charlie Good, a senior at Warwick High School in Lititz, Pa., were recognized as Yoder Scholars, the highest academic award an incoming student can receive.

“I’m very excited about the number and caliber of students who applied this year,” said Mark Sawin, program director and chair of history at EMU. “Hannah and Charlie are both wonderfully creative and curious people with wide-ranging interests and strong leadership abilities. I’m grateful they’ve decided to join us as next year’s Yoder Scholars.â€
