Hollinger actually got his job before he graduated, moving to the Washington D.C. area in the summer of 2014. He finished his last class (calculus) online while beginning a research assistant position at . Hollinger now works exclusively with data analysis and power sector modeling for the .

But he’s is still enjoying other long-term benefits of his internship: the research he contributed to was recently published by his mentor and collaborator, business professor , in the , the magazine of the .

The economic benefits of solar panels

Hollinger interned in the spring and summer of 2014 at which installed the solar panels on EMU鈥檚 Hartzler Library. Smith, who owns the Staunton-based company, suggested Hollinger investigate if EMU鈥檚 solar photovoltaic (PV) project provided any economic benefits to other ratepayers within the Harrisonburg territory.

Opponents say solar hurts local ratepayers by raising the stranded electricity generation costs for non-solar customers. Proponents say the opposite is true, that when solar is in use, energy costs go down and other economic and health benefits accrue for all ratepayers within a given area.

鈥淭ony had this idea that since his company had data from EMU, we might be able to work with the Harrisonburg Electric Commission to actually test this claim and see if it is true,鈥 Hollinger said. 鈥淲e found that within this scenario, distributed solar is a benefit, not a big one, but not a negative impact either.鈥

Hollinger cautioned that the analysis was for a very specific location with a non-generating utility company and that findings might be different in different scenarios.

Internship helps determine career path

By the end of his internship, Hollinger knew he wanted to work in environmental policy, or renewable energy research and data, so he began applying to jobs that seemed to fit those requirements. The ICF International job was 鈥渃ompletely random, just something I stumbled onto online and applied for.鈥

Within a month of applying, the company hired him. Hollinger thinks his experience at Secure Futures paved the way there. Smith agrees that Hollinger鈥檚 experience at Secure Futures may have proven to be a differentiating factor.

Hollinger 鈥渄eveloped a lot of high value expertise very quickly about the economics of renewable energy and he was able to translate that into a positive result for himself,鈥 Smith said. 鈥淎nd he is overall a very sharp guy. He deserves his own credit for that.鈥

Hollinger interned at Secure Futures, a solar company owned by Professor Anthony Smith. Smith supervised Hollinger’s research and authored the article that听 appeared in the May/June issue of SolarToday. (Courtesy of SolarToday)

Hollinger is now part of a six-member team that helps 鈥渢he EPA model their environmental regulations as related to the US power sector,鈥 he said. When the EPA is considering a new regulation, policymakers need to know what kind of an impact it could have both on the environment and the national economy. So Hollinger and his team use ICF International鈥檚 Integrated Planning Model along with EPA-directed scenarios, to help representatives determine what regulations would work best if passed. On the team, Hollinger works with data analysis and manipulation.

One example of a project he has worked on is modeling the effects of a proposed piece of EPA legislation called The Clean Power Plan. The plan would establish carbon pollution standards for existing power plants. Hollinger鈥檚 team has been running scenarios for the EPA and producing data that shows 鈥渋f these are the standards you wish to set, then this will be the cost, this will be the impact.鈥

Hollinger said his close relationship with Smith and other professors helped guide him onto his current career path. 鈥淚 was one of the first people to major in and economics,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 wasn鈥檛 immediately sure how those two fit together, but through conversations with professors and classes that taught me to be a critical thinker, I began to figure it out.鈥

Royals Block Stevenson In 2-0 Win /now/news/2012/royals-block-stevenson-in-2-0-win/ Mon, 10 Sep 2012 19:17:03 +0000 http://emu.edu/now/news/?p=13993 Sunday was a much nicer day for soccer than Saturday.听 The Royals played on both days, and enjoyed Sunday’s sun en route to a 2-0 victory over Stevenson University.

EMU struck first, scoring just over 12 minutes into the game.听听(Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) and听听(Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite) worked a nice inside attack, with Mast centering to Hollinger from the right side.听 Hollinger easily beat the goalie for his first goal of the season.

The Mustangs nearly scored in the 22nd minute when they had two pointblank shots, but both were blocked by EMU defenders.听 Stevenson again made a flurry midway through the second, but the defense again got their legs in the way and kept most of the shots from even reaching keeper听(Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite).

In the 80th minute, the Royals got their breathing room.听听(Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite) sent a fantastic through pass to听听(Harleysville, PA/Christopher Dock) on the left side.听 Moyer’s shot bounced off the cross bar and the post, and the officials ruled it went in, making it 2-0.

Moyer nearly scored again in the 84th minute, when he got a shot past SU’s keeper.听 But a Mustang defender got to the rolling ball and knocked it away before it crossed the goal line.

Yoder and the EMU defensive line kept Stevenson at bay the rest of the way, preserving the shutout.听 It was the first time the Mustangs had been shut out this year, as they entered averaging 2.5 goals per game.

Stevenson had a 26-15 advantage in shots, although the Royals had the edge in quality, on-goal shots, 7-6.听 Yoder finished with six saves.

Eastern Mennonite improves to 2-2-1 with the win and has another non-conference game next week before hitting the ODAC slate.听 The Royals play at Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, and then open ODAC play at Hampden-Sydney next Saturday.

Men’s Soccer 4-1 in ODAC /now/news/2011/mens-soccer-4-1-in-odac/ Thu, 06 Oct 2011 12:48:32 +0000 http://emu.edu/now/news/?p=8794 One thing is becoming clear 鈥 Eastern Mennonite’s men like to play on their own turf.听 Wednesday night they welcomed a talented Hampden-Sydney squad to Harrisonburg and scored two second-half goals to win 2-1 and improve to 5-1 at home.

The game was light on shots in the opening minutes as the teams established the flow of play.听 Starting in the 14th minute, the Royals started to take over and fired five shots in the span of four minutes.听 (Mt. Jackson, VA/Stonewall Jackson) put a pair on goal and the men had a few looks sail wide off breakaways.

After play evened out, Hampden-Sydney struck first in the 36th minute.听听Chris Whiteside听sent a long pass ahead to Tiger teammate James Lawrence.听 As EMU’s defense stuttered and hoped for an offsides call, Lawrence punched in the shot for a 1-0 lead.

The Royals nearly got an equalizer in the closing seconds of the half, as (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Mennonite) zipped a shot past HSC’s keeper, but it sailed inches wide of the goal.

After a quiet start to the second half, (Addis Abeba, Ethiopia/Lycee Guebre Mariam) triggered an explosion in the 67th minute.听 The speedy forward made a move at the top of the box and fired a shot which went through the keepers hands and tied the score.

Less than two minutes later, the Royals took the lead.听 With a mess of players in the box, (Harrisonburg, VA/Eastern Mennonite) shot a loose ball which (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) deflected into the net with his heel.

With 22 minutes still to go, EMU had some time to hold off the Tigers.听 The defensive line did well to bend and then send back long clears, while the offense dribbled off the clock.听 A hustling (Vienna, VA/James Madison) nearly scored in the final minute, but the men settled for the 2-1 win.

Eastern Mennonite had a 22-12 edge in shots, including 10-4 on goal.听 (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville) played all 90 minutes in goal and collected three saves.

The Royals improve to 6-6-1 with the win.听 More importantly, they tightened their grip on second place in the ODAC standings with a 4-1 mark.听 Next up is a date at Guilford this Friday, which is 2-2 in the league after a win 2-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday.
