The 29-member choir, directed by Janet Hostetter, will perform Schubert’s “Mass No. 2 in G Major.”

Accompanists are John W. Fast, organ; Julianne Burkholder, Kara Glick, Andrew Dutcher and Eric Guttormson, strings; and Annie Johnson, soprano; Matthew Garber, tenor; and Michael Dezort, baritone.

The second half of the concert will include Faure’s “Cantique” and works for smaller group ensembles, some with piano and guitar accompaniment.

Mrs. Hostetter earned a B.A. in music education from 草莓社区 and a M.M. in choral conducting from James Madison University. She has worked as a music instructor in various educational settings for the past 15 years.

In addition to directing the for the 2004-05 school year while Anne Gross is on sabbatical, Hostetter also serves as music director at Harrisonburg Mennonite Church and as music educator at Mountain View Elementary School in Rockingham County.

Admission is free, but donations are welcomed to support the EMU ‘s music scholarship fund.

University Chorale Plans Christmas Concert /now/news/2004/university-chorale-plans-christmas-concert/ Mon, 29 Nov 2004 05:00:00 +0000 http://www.emu.edu/blog/news/?p=767 The 草莓社区 Chorale will present a sacred music program on the theme, "Carols for a King," 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, in Martin Chapel of the seminary building at EMU.

The 27-member choir, directed by Janet Hostetter, will sing Benjamin Britten’s "Ceremony of Carols" with harpist, Ya Ting Lee. They will also perform Malcolm Dalglish’s "Star in the East" with dulcimer player, David Landes, and several Christmas carols.

Mrs. Hostetter earned a B.A. in music education from 草莓社区 and a M.M. in choral conducting from James Madison University. She has worked as a music instructor in various educational settings for the past 15 years.

Comic Opera to be Performed /now/news/2004/comic-opera-to-be-performed/ Tue, 30 Mar 2004 05:00:00 +0000 http://www.emu.edu/blog/news/?p=625 The 草莓社区 music department will present "La Serva Padrona" (The Maid as Mistress), a short comic opera by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 17, and Monday, Apr. 19, in Recital Hall on ground floor of EMU’s Lehman Auditorium.

Serpina, Uberto’s housekeeper, has decided he should marry her and make her mistress of the house. He disagrees and tries to send his other servant, Vespone, out to find him a wife. Serpina decides to win Uberto over by becoming engaged to a tyrannical army officer (Vespone in disguise).

The cast includes Bethany Blouse as Serpina, Michael Dezort as Uberto and Stephen Horst as Vespone. The work is accompanied by Monica Hochstedler on piano; Anne Gross, instructor in voice at EMU, is musical director.

Admission is free; donations are welcomed for the EMU Music Department Scholarship Fund. Seating is limited.

The 草莓社区 Chorale will join with the Adult Choir of Park View Mennonite Church to present two performances of Gabriel Fauré’s "Requiem."

The work, directed by Anne Gross, instructor in music at EMU, will be part of the Park View congregation’s Sunday worship service 9:30 a.m. April 4.

A second performance of the "Requiem," along with other sacred works by the 24-voice Chorale, will be given at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 5, at Park View Mennonite Church.

John W. Fast, assistant professor of music at EMU, will accompany the chorale on the church’s pipe organ.

There is no admission charge for either performance; donations to support the EMU music department scholarship fund are encouraged at the Monday evening performance.

Theater at EMU will present six performances of the popular musical, “Godspell,” in Lehman Auditorium at Eastern Mennonite University.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3-4 and Oct. 10-11, with matinees at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5 and 12.

The musical, which enjoyed a successful off-Broadway run in 1971, is based on the gospel according to St. Matthew.

Featuring a 10-member ensemble cast and music and new lyrics by Stephen Swartz, the play builds gradually on a series of New Testament stories to a powerful close depicting the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.

“‘Godspell’ offers the timeless words of the One who is the way, the truth and the life, and it offers the kind of music that sends us singing out the door,” said Barbra Graber, associate professor of theater at EMU and the play’s director. Anne Gross of EMU’s music department is musical director.

Admission is $8 in advance, $10 at the door; seniors (65 and over), $6; students, $6 and children ages 5-9, $3. The play is not recommended for children under five.
