A round of golf for the 草莓社区 (EMU) men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 teams is no longer dependent on the weather, thanks to the newly installed SkyTrak golf simulator. This technology, set up in a room in the Facilities Management building, allows golfers to hit balls into a net while the machine analyzes their shots.

Head coach , in his first year helming the teams, says the additional practice option has helped his team make more consistent improvements on a range of skills.

鈥淭he simulator picks up on the speed of the ball, speed of the club, and the spin of the ball and calculates where the ball would have gone,鈥 Swartzentruber explained. 鈥淚t then shows a simulation of the ball’s path through air.鈥

鈥淏eing able to see your actions, a golfer is better able to make necessary corrections,鈥 said David King, director of athletics at EMU. King said the simulator was purchased with funds donated specifically for this project, as well as fundraising conducted by the team.

Former coach Mike Yoder purchased the simulator two years ago, but it needed additional parts to be fully operational, which Swartzentruber acquired last summer.

鈥淎n additional advantage of the simulator is that it doesn’t require a lot of space,鈥 King said.

It鈥檚 a real boon for the golfers to accurately calculate how far each shot would have traveled.

鈥淭his is very helpful when trying to get the total distance of your clubs figured out,鈥 said senior Troy Hodge

Additionally, the simulator keeps the team on top of their game through the winter.

鈥淭he machine helps us practice and maintain good swings for the spring season,鈥 says junior Ben Shenk.

In addition to its basic analytic capabilities, the simulator comes with three playing modes 鈥 closest to the pin, longest drive, and challenge mode 鈥 which can make for some friendly competition between the golfers.

鈥淵ou can challenge someone else or play by yourself. Our team enjoys the 鈥榗losest to the pin鈥 and 鈥榣ong drive鈥 competitions, because we can compete to see who is the best that day,鈥 Hodge said.

EMU hires alum Andre Swartzentruber to lead golf program /now/news/2019/emu-hires-alum-andre-swartzentruber-to-lead-golf-program/ Tue, 11 Jun 2019 14:48:12 +0000 /now/news/?p=42419 草莓社区 has announced the hiring of聽Andre Swartzentruber聽as the new .聽He has been a golf coach and mathematics teacher at nearby Spotswood High School the past five years.

“Firstly, I want to thank God for the opportunity that he has laid in front of me to coach college golf,” said Swartzentruber.聽 “I also want to thank my former high school players. They mean the world to me, and they have shaped the coach I am today. I probably learned more from them than they learned from me. I would also like to thank Director of Athletics聽Dave King聽and President聽Susan Schultz Huxman聽for trusting me and allowing me the opportunity to coach at this university.”

As an athlete, Swartzentruber was an all-district player at Spotswood High School before helping to start the EMU golf program during his senior collegiate year in 2012-13, earning recognitions to the ODAC Sportsmanship Team and the All-Academic Team. Now he will become the third coach for the Royals entering the eighth season in program history.

“I’m really excited to add Andre to our quality coaching staff,” King said. “I’m pleased to be able to give another young alumnus an entrance into collegiate coaching. His knowledge of EMU and the local community, combined with his passion to give back to his alma mater make Andre the right person to continue moving the golf program forward. His connections to the high school golf community will help in his recruiting efforts.”

Spotswood’s teams qualified for the regional tournament every year under Swartzentruber’s leadership while claiming numerous all-district and all-region awards. The Blazers earned a team low score of 296 during his tenure, while an individual golfer tied the school record with a round of 65 (-7). He coached a female player to back-to-back top-10 finishes in the state tournament, with a male golfer landing in the top-15.

King pointed out Swartzentruber’s strengths to springboard the direction of the EMU program.

“While not having collegiate coaching experience, his understanding of recruiting from the other side will help him connect with high school golfers,” said King. “It has taken longer than expected to establish our golf program, but I believe Andre’s energy and enthusiasm for the work will result in positive growth for the men’s and women’s teams. I’m eager to help Andre grow as a collegiate coach and see the program develop to its fullest potential.”

Swartzentruber said he was drawn to give back to 草莓社区.

“My time at EMU was and always will be a special time in my life,” Swartzentruber explained.聽 “Getting the opportunity to give back to that community that shaped me as a young adult is an exciting one that I am really looking forward to.聽 I hope I can be a positive influence and develop young men and women as golfers but also as fine human beings in today’s society.”

Royals Athlete of the Week: Olyvia Longacre /now/news/2017/royals-athlete-week-olyvia-longacre/ Thu, 28 Sep 2017 21:57:41 +0000 http://emu.edu/now/news/?p=35068 厂辞辫丑辞尘辞谤别听聽(Telford, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) has been playing golf for quite some time. Now well into her second year of collegiate golf at 草莓社区, Olyvia continues to make impressive improvements in her game.

Last week she shot two of her four lowest collegiate golf rounds, 85 and 84. While she was at it, she lowered her season average to 87.0, 4.5 strokes below last year鈥檚.

Olyvia came into this season with a new perspective.

鈥淚 just wanted to have fun, and I didn鈥檛 care how I did,鈥 she explained. 鈥淚 knew that I was putting too much pressure on myself, and so if I tried not to think about winning as much, I鈥檇 end up playing better.鈥

Her plan seems to have worked. Her coach, Mike Yoder, agreed.

鈥淥lyvia has had a strong progression from last year to now,鈥 Yoder said. 鈥淣ot only has she improved her mechanics but she has made great strides mentally. She does a better job of staying in the moment and playing to her strengths during a round.鈥

For Olyvia, golf is a family affair.

鈥淢y dad plays golf, so he took me to a little camp when I was really little,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut then growing up, I鈥檇 also play golf with my grandma…both of my grandparents play golf. I grew up with it a lot with my uncles too, they play golf.鈥

This long-term history with the sport influenced Olyvia鈥檚 decision to play in college.

鈥淚 just see it as getting to play free golf, honestly,鈥 Olyvia admitted.

Olyvia is EMU鈥檚 only women鈥檚 golfer.

鈥淏ut it鈥檚 fine,鈥 Olyvia said, 鈥渂ecause in high school I was the only girl.鈥

However, she does hope for more people to join the team so they can travel to more tournaments.

When Olyvia has a free moment, she enjoys the simple things in life.

鈥淚 like to listen to music, hang out with friends, go to the caf or not the caf…just go out and get food.鈥

With a health and physical education major, along with coaching and business minors, Olyvia could see herself as a coach or elementary school PE teacher after graduation.

Olyvia values golf for the chance it provides her to de-stress.

鈥淚 think my favorite part of the sport is how relaxed it is. When I go out and play golf in the afternoon, I don鈥檛 really feel like it鈥檚 a practice. Like, I feel like it鈥檚 just time to calm down from my day at school. So, it鈥檚 more fun for me than anything else. I just enjoy it.鈥

鈥淚 am pleased that the conference recognizes student-athletes for their focus on fair play and sportsmanship,” explained ODAC Commissioner Brad Bankston.聽 “The conference prides itself on positive sportsmanship and encouraging student-athletes to lead by example. 聽Each one of the honorees has been selected by the coaches in recognition of their conduct in the arena.聽 My hat is off to these student-athletes – thanking them for the example they set for all of us.鈥

The ODAC has a rich tradition in promoting fair play and good sportsmanship in each sport across the league.聽 The character of the conference鈥檚 student-athletes on and off the field is a representation of not only the individuals and teams, but also the institutions they play for.
