When I was hired at that time as director of campus ministries, I was sure to meet with Wendy for discernment and a bit or orientation. Wendy mused that in some ways my role was that of a shepherd, moving about the university and checking in on the health of various groups. I’ve carried that metaphor with me through the years. Wendy also helped us launch an annual Christmas Lessons and Carols service co-sponsored by the university and seminary communities that continued for many years. Working with her to realize the dream for creating a prayer labyrinth on the campus hill was a highlight for sure but mostly I valued engaging with her in common, everyday, insightful conversation and valuing her thoughtful and delightful manner of teaching spiritual formation and direction. She was a mentor, teacher, and peer. What a gem!
